In Ancient Greece it was called “oregano” from the words “oros” and “ganos”, meaning joy/splendour. The healing properties of oregano were known to the Ancient Greeks, who used it extensively as a medicine. There are many references found in ancient texts about its therapeutic use.
Oregano is rich in vitamins E, K, A, B3 and B6 and is one of the herbs with the highest content of vitamin C. At the same time, it contains manganese, magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus and iron as well as beta-carotene. It is a good source of fiber. Its antioxidant substances thymol and carvacrol have a strong antibacterial and antifungal effect and support the immune system.
In Greek gastronomy, authentic oregano has a widespread place in the kitchen as, due to its aromas, it gives flavor and character to salads, meats, white cheeses, fish and stews.
